Durham County Council are implementing SMS short codes with Text Message Server for council services and campaigns.
Due to the harsh winter just passed, the Council decided to provide weather and travel reports via SMS. Local people simple sent a text saying “Forecast” to the short code 60030, to add themselves to the Weather Report Group and then received vital updates on travel and weather within the region.
The 'City of Culture' Campaign, which was launched in Durham in early spring 2010, also used SMS short codes for voting and marketing.
